KFC Potato Chips

Japanese Food Review #95

I know you're all thinking, "Didn't you already review these in November of 2012?" You really all are idiots, aren't you? We reviewed salty ginger KFC chips last time. These are boneless crunchy salt KFC chips. We gave the ginger chips a rating of 3.5 and concluded that the Colonel was spinning in his grave. Will the Calbee chip scientists fair better this time around?

First off, I don't know why they chose to simulate boneless chicken if they wanted to make them crunchy. Bones are the crunchiest part, right? The chips were a little spicy and had a lot of black pepper on them. I haven't been to KFC in awhile, but this never used to be a staple of their product. There was a bit of a chicken taste, but it didn't bring KFC to mind. It was similar to the chicken flavoring in cheap instant ramen.

Ratings:
Gaybot: 5  I like black pepper chips, but Calbee's plain black pepper chips are much better than these.
Girlbot: 0  She couldn't eat these, and she loves potato chips. She said they were too spicy and tasted bad.
Overall: 2.5

Ladies and gentlemen..., he's still spinning.

KFC Colonel's Day

Happy birthday dead guy that's now a cartoon character!
Did you know that KFCs in Japan celebrate Colonel's Day? I guess Colonel Sanders was born on September 9th, so you can get discounted chicken and stuff this month.

Who cares? No one, but if you follow the Japanese version of KFC on Twitter and tweet about it, you'll be entered to win an amazing prize. (You should click on that link and scroll down to see what I'm talking about). They're calling it "the drool without thinking 3D chicken" campaign. You can win a keyboard that only has the K, F, and C buttons labeled. All the other ones are 3D pieces of chicken (only 1 winner), or a drumstick mouse (1 winner), or a chicken USB memory stick (1 winner), or chicken earrings (47 winners).

Don't miss out on this chance to give KFC free advertising!

KFC Christmas 2013

As I sort of promised you in my insightful piece on Lotteria's Merry Xmas package, today we will be looking at KFC's Christmas specials.
The two main packages will run you about $40 a piece. The only difference between the two is that the top one offers 8 pieces of original chicken, while the bottom only offers 4 originals and 6 chicken tenders. You also get a plate, a cake, and a salad (yuck) with chicken on top (yum?). If you want people to think you're classy, but you still really want KFC, you can choose from their special menu.
They offer a roasted breast (already hilarious) filled with shrimp-mushroom-cheese crean. Wait, but know shrimp dogs? Lotteria wins again.

Kyary and KFC to Induce Vomiting

I have to hand it to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. She really has the pop vomiting market cornered. First she had this GU commercial, and now she stars on a page that is designed to makes you sick to your stomach. Remember the KFC Krushers commercial? The slogan was kura kura which means dizzy. This is a strange slogan for a non-alcoholic beverage, but stranger yet is the new web page KFC made. It features an optical allusion that causes dizziness. After a few seconds a warning comes up telling you that you shouldn't look at the page for too long. What a brilliant idea for an ad campaign! If you still want to look, and you're a chicken if you don't (buck, buck, buuuuck), check out Kyary's Krusher page here. If any of you are trying to find a new way to expand your child's mind (what with the man saying you can't lace kids "apple juice" with hallucinogens), try forcing them to look at this for ten minutes.

Kyary and KFC Krushers

Doesn't this just make you want to swallow too much peyote and try to eat LSD with your eyes... I mean go to KFC? I believe this is actually the second time Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has made a commercial for KFC Krushers, and this time you can hear her song Kura Kura. The slogan is, "Do you kura kura?" As far as I know, kura kura means dizzy or excited. Maybe it's some new slang I'm not aware of. It sounds like she's saying "Chu chu kura kura." Chu is the sound of a kiss, so it's probably about the giddiness of kissing. You for sure didn't need to know any of that. Basically, the ad campaign doesn't make much sense.

The Santa Colonel

A lot of KFCs in Japan have statues of the colonel, and he is wisely dressed like Santa during this special time of the year. Also, I had some flowers when I walked by:

The Colonel Wishes You a Merry Christmas

I think many people know that KFC chicken is considered a traditional Christmas dinner in Japan. You can actually pre-order your Kentucky Christmas bucket in October. Here's a look at a couple of the menus being offered:
It's got everything you'd expect to find on Christmas: a bucket of chicken, a special collectors edition Christmas plate, a Christmas salad, and a chocolate cake.

Recently, other restaurants are challenging KFC's monopoly. One popular alternative is Lotteria.
They offer a much more traditional looking Christmas cake. Also, they've swapped out the Christmas salad for french fries, pigs in a blanket, and french toast. Looks like Lotteria has won this round. Your move KFC. Kentucky Christmas 2013 better be something extra special.

Japanese Food Review #27: KFC Salty Ginger Chicken Chips

Here's kind of a fun fact for you: Colonel Sanders died less than 10 months before I was born. Because of this, it has been widely speculated that I am the reincarnation of the Colonel.

And on with the food review. KFC in Japan is promoting their new flavor salty ginger. There's a coupon on the back of this bag. All you have to do is carry a greasy part of a chip bag around to save 60 yen on a piece of chicken that will assist you in moving one step forward towards your future death. These chips did have a bit of a ginger flavor, but the good folks at Calbee seem to have mistaken chicken flavor with burnt garbage flavor. It wasn't that bad, but you should still steer clear of the Colonel's latest recipe.

Girlbot: 4
Overall: 3.5
I think we can all agree that the Colonel is spinning in his grave.
