Mosdo!

Finally, Moss Burger and Mr. Donut have teamed up at long last! Mosdo is another witty combination of the names. You can get rice burgers at Mr. Donut (one with sweet beans and custard) and doughnut burgers at Moss Burger. This commercial shows the French Cruller Wound Chorizo. It's chorizo in a doughnut for only ¥390. I think that's a sign of the apocalypse or something.

Also, it reminds me of the time we made chocolate chip cookies at work. We made just two with chunks of chorizo instead of chocolate and gave those to an Ecuadorian guy we worked with. Everyone sat around saying how delicious the cookies were, and the Ecuadorian guy tried really hard to eat the cookies and be polite. It's funny because it's racist!

Halloween Mr. Donut

Golden Bomber and Mister Donut are back together at long last. This time they're promoting the traditional Halloween donuts we all know and love. The lyrics to the song are, "henshin shichao, Halloween." Basically it means, "Go and change, Halloween." So the members of Golden Bomber turn into your run of the mill Halloween characters: a vampire, a man witch/little red riding hood, and giant fork through head man. But wait! The lovable member Darvish hasn't changed! Oops, Darvish thinks he's supposed to take his clothes off for Halloween! Silly Darvish! Anyway, seriously kids, you should eat at Mr. Donut.

Golden Bomber and Mister Donut Do It Again

I've written about the Doughnut Exercise before, but this time Golden Bomber shows us how it's truly done. Obviously this song is mostly aimed at children, but I think it is also supposed to trick parents into thinking Mister Donut can be good for your kids.

Hello Kitty and Golden Bomber Together at Last

Mister Donut poisoned a dozen customers last week, but all has been forgiven since they were able to accomplish what we've all been having fever dreams about for the last six months: put Golden Bomber and Hello Kitty together in a 15 second commercial.

The ad begins with three members spotting Hello Kitty, or Kitty-chan as she's known in Japan, but they point out that it can't be Kitty-chan because she's not wearing a ribbon. They then see another member of Golden Bomber, Kenji Darvish, inside Mister Donut wearing a ribbon in his hair and sitting with two high school girls for some reason. They wonder if he is Kitty-chan. Cut to him saying basically, "You're not Kitty-chan without the ribbon, right?" And everyone else says, "Right." This all makes perfect sense because Mister Donut has added ribbons to some of their doughnuts.

Would You Like Bleach with Your Doughnut?

A Mister Donut store in Osaka mistakenly served drinking water with a large amount of bleach in it last Friday. After closing the shop, employees usually put the water pitchers in a sink to soak in a water and bleach mixture overnight, but a part-time employee instead filled the pitchers with the bleach, put the lids on, and left them to soak. The next morning, a different employee mistakenly thought someone had already rinsed the pitchers and prepared the drinking water, so it was served to customers. Starting around noon, three people, including a three-year-old and a female high school student,  felt sick and went to the hospital. About a dozen others reported symptoms, but no one became seriously ill.

This is all fine and good, but mainichi.jp reported the water contained 600 ppm of chlorine, or about 600 to 6000 times the amount of chlorine found in normal drinking water in Japan. In fact, 10 ppm of chlorine is thought to be too much even for a swimming pool. I don't mean to brag, but I think in a blind taste test I could tell the difference between tap water and pool water let alone poison cleaning water. The little kid drinking it I can kind of understand, but every other person must have thought, "Does the water kind of taste like death today? Oh well, I don't want to bother anyone."

Japanese Food Review #38: Sakura Donuts

Sakura, meaning cherry blossom, is a flavor in Japan, and limited edition sakura flavor products are popular this time of year. The sakura trees won't bloom for over a month in most of Japan, though they've started in Okinawa. I guess they are released now to build up the anticipation for the blooming. Some Japanese people have told me that sakura flavored is based off of pickled sakura leaves, though the products I've tried never taste salty at all. Most Sakura flowers don't smell at all, but I believe there may be one type that does, and that's where the flavor comes from. It's basically a faint, generic, floral smell. If the doughnuts weren't pink, I might have thought they were just original flavor.

There's also a nice commercial for these doughnuts. It seems that if you eat them, flowers will spring forth from you mouth and old ladies will scream in joy.

Ratings:
Gaybot: 3  We actually tried two types: a chewy doughnut and a crispy one. I thought they were both bad.
Girlbot: 5 for the chewy type.
              3 for the crispy type.
Overall: 3.666666666666666666666667

New Raw Donut!

Hard to tell if this commercial's goal is to make you want to try this donut or to make you vomit in your mouth. This woman is actually pretty famous. Her name is Matsuko Deluxe, and I'm sure you'll shocked to learn that she used to be a man.

Doughnut Exercise

Japan is getting super good at tricking children into making videos that they will later be horribly ashamed of.

Double Curry Bread

The folks at Mr. Doughnut have done it again creating a bread that contains both yellow and black curry. They've also created an amazing ad that appears to be incredibly expensive. The research they did on Indian culture alone must have cost a fortune.
